2009 SHIPWRECK SURVEY PROJECT

Presentation at Kids Connect! Summer Camp August 11, 2009
By Lillian Azevedo

Kids Connect!-Summer Camp was founded by Latoya Scarbro, Twyla Richardson, Cherise Gumbs, and Charla Conner to “give back to the community through the development of our youth (Scarbro, 2009).”

Lillian Azevedo and Don Mitchell made a presentation at the camp at the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School on August 11, 2009.  The presentation lasted one hour and the author told them about the island’s underwater heritage using images and artefacts.  A cannon ball taken from Junks Hole was used to expose the children to the physical evidence and teach them not to remove artefacts from the sea. Tangible evidence was more effective than pictures and the pictures were more convincing than words.

Of the 20 children, four had gone on the earlier Buen Consejo field trip.  It was interesting to see that they remembered so much from the trip and were happy to share what they knew about the island’s cannon and anchors with their classmates.  The kids were between the ages of 5 and 11, with the majority about 8 years old.
